A Psychodynamic Exploration of Creativity of Steven Spielberg
Ha Jee-Hyun

Abstract
By focusing on three recent films -"A.I.", "Minority Report", and "Catch Me If You Can"--this author explored the creativity of American film director Steven Spielberg. Three major themes were repeated all through his works. The first is the family reunion fantasy. Spielberg¡¯s own parents divorced and through his films he identifies with the main characters and tries to gratify this fantasy. This was revealed more directly in "Catch Me If You Can", where episodes in the movie were very similar to those in Spielberg¡¯s own life. Second, is Spielberg¡¯s minority complex as a Jew, which he has tried to overcome through film making. The third theme is the Peter Pan complex. Most of the main characters in Spielberg¡¯s films are children or young adults who look younger than others. ¡°A.I.¡± featured a robot who wanted to be a human being but accepted its fate of being a robot and remaining as a child forever. For a long time, Spielberg feared being a mature adult, but in this film he accepted his conflict and changed the theme so that it was somewhat different to his earlier works. These three major themes repeatedly appeared in the most of Spielberg¡¯s films, and provided motivation for his film making. For Spielberg, directing films served as a form of self psychotherapy. Thus he was able to achieve success and become a stable, middle-age adult without a major crisis or neurotic conflicts.
